Caramelized Sweet Onion Smash Burger

Caramelized Sweet Onion Smash Burger

Celebrate National Burger Day in Australia with this mouthwatering recipe featuring succulent ground beef infused with Sweet Onion, topped with caramelized onions and your favourite fixings, all nestled between soft hamburger buns.

Ingredients:

  • 900 grams ground beef
  • 125 milliliters grated Sweet Onion
  • 3 cloves minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon Beef Seasoning Salt
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly cracked pepper, to taste
  • 1 Sweet Onion, sliced
  • 4 slices of Cheddar Cheese, optional but totally recommended
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • Olive Oil
  • Sliced dill pickles
  • Cos Lettuce

Equipment:

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Big Green Egg for direct cooking at 200°C.

  2. In a bowl, mix together the ground beef, grated sweet onion, minced garlic, Vidalia Brands® Special Blend Seasoning Salt or your preferred beef seasoning, Worcestershire sauce, and freshly cracked pepper. Refrigerate for 2 hours.

  3. Lightly oil the barbecue half-moon cast iron griddle and caramelize the sliced sweet onions. Set them aside. While the onions are caramelizing, loosely shape the beef mixture into 85-113 gram balls.

  4. Place the beef patties onto the griddle. Use the weight of the barbecue cast iron grill press to flatten the patties until they are thin.

  5. Let the burgers cook for 60-90 seconds until the juices start to bubble through the burgers. Flip the patties once; make sure to scrape under the patty to keep the crispy, caramelized crust on the bottom. If desired, add cheese and cook for another minute or two.

  6. Top the burgers with caramelized onions, pickles, lettuce, and your favourite condiments but we would recommend the Big Green Egg
Sweet & Smoky KC Sauce. Serve immediately on hamburger buns.
